Liverpool Lime Street is one of the most popular stations in the north of England. As one of the most visited cities in Britain, Liverpool plays host to thousands of tourists every day and a large majority of these people travel into Liverpool Lime Street station - whether from another city or from the airport (which is slightly out of the main city so you are unable to walk the distance). The only issue that they have is that when they arrive in Liverpool they have no form of transport. Whilst it is very easy to walk around Liverpool and is certainly achievable, you end up spending most of your time in the city travelling and not sightseeing - not what you want to be doing when you are trying to see Liverpool where there is so much to do. The other problem with not having any transport is that you are restricting yourself to Liverpool. Whilst this is no slur on Liverpool itself, it is possible that you may want to visit the suburbs, perhaps for a walk or to visit one of the National Trust sights, which you can only do if you are in possession of a vehicle.
It is, therefore, essential that you hire a car when you arrive at Liverpool Lime Street station. If you have a car you can do whatever you want, whenever you want which is an obvious benefit if you decide that you want a change of scenery at some point of your holiday.
